In 2013, there were 44 victims of sexual assault in Logan County and 270 victims in the 10-county area of the Barren River Area Development District.
And last week both Logan County Judge/Executive Logan Chick and Russellville mayor Mark Stratton combined to sign a proclamation that designated March as sexual assault awareness month in Logan County and Russellville.
The proclamation recognized the volunteers who staff a 24-hour crisis line as well as Hope Harbor, which promotes personal safety and awareness by offering educational programs to schools, religious, community and civic organizations as well as professional training to medical, mental health, law enforcement and education personnel regarding sexual assault.
“It is vitally important to increase public awareness of sexual violence and to increase support for agencies providing support services to victims/survivors,” the proclamation states.
The goal of Sexual Assault Awareness Month is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence.
By working together and pooling our resources during the month, we can highlight sexual violence as a major public health, human rights and social justice issue and reinforce the need for prevention efforts.
