The News-Democrat & Leader has been following the progress of Kelly Whittaker, a young lady who was recently involved in a terrible car accident on Jan. 22 at the Logan-Warren County line. She was life flighted to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Trauma Unit where she has been fighting for her life.
Kelly Hargis married Russellville Police Officer Seth Whittaker the end of last year. Seth is the son of Logan County Sheriff Wallace Whittaker.
Seth has been keeping many updated on his wife’s condition through Facebook, while his father has been contacting the newspaper and radio station to keep others up-to-date as well. Many have been praying for the Whittaker and Hargis family, especially Kelly who has so far undergone numerous surgeries to keep her alive.
Sheriff Whittaker’s recent update reports Kelly is still in critical condition. She has, however, been responding to medical staff, and has even been communicating with family members.
Kelly has had severe brain injury which required immediate surgery soon after she arrived at the hospital. She has also suffered from a shattered pelvis, broken back and several face fractures that required a 6-8 hour surgery.
“Although Kelly is beginning to show significant signs of improvement, the medical staff warns us that she is not out of danger at this time, and that she is still extremely critical,” said sheriff Whittaker, who asks for continued prayer on her behalf.
“I want to thank everyone for all the prayers and ask you all to keep them coming. This is going to be a very long road to recovery,” said Wallace. “Thank you for all you have shown to not only my family, but Kelly’s family as well.” Kelly is the daughter of Randy and Dorothy Hargis.
Seth, Kelly’s parents and his parents are staying at the hospital by her side praying and watching God perform miracles everyday. They are facing a very long bumpy road and will need help along the way. This is why a benefit for Kelly and Seth is being held on March 8 beginning at 4 p.m. at Logan County High School. Organizers are hoping the community will come together to help this sweet, young couple and possibly lighten their load as they face financial burdens from her medical expenses.
If you have any questions, please call 270-726-4911 or 270-772-0425. The benefit can receive mail at Logan County 911 addressed to Seth and Kelly Benefit, 102 N Owen St., Russellville, KY 42276.
