Duncan comes to Cougars from Murray

Logan County High School announced on Monday that former Murray High School coach Steve Duncan will be the next head football coach for the Cougars.

This past year, Duncan led the Tiers to a 9-5 overall record after posting seasons with double digit wins the previous four years.

“I would like to thank the search committee for their time and expertise in the search and interview process,” said LCHS principal Casey Jaynes. “With over 35 candidates from 8 different states their homework prior to the interview process was demanding of their time and effort.”

Members of the hiring and interview committee were Mark Thompson, Becky Spencer, Lonnie Mason, Mike Hoots, Ethan Meguiar and Marshall Kemp.

Duncan comes to LCHS with a variety of coaching experiences all with success. Most recently Duncan was the head coach at Murray High School where he led the Tigers to the following accomplishments:

• 2013 District Runner-up/Region Champions, 9-5 record

• 2012 District/Region Runner-up, 10-3 record

• 2011 District/Region Champions, 12-2 record

• 2010 District Champions/ Region Runner-up, 12-1 record

• 2009 District Champions,/Region Runner-up, 12-1 record

• 2008 District Runner-up, 8-4 record

• 2009, 2010 -Undefeated regular seasons

• First time in over 100 years of football that Murray competed for Region Championship 5 concurrent years

During his tenure at Murray, Duncan was selected Kentucky 2009, 2010, and 2011, District #1, 2A Coach of the Year and the Kentucky 2010 Class 2A State Coach of the Year.

Prior to coming to Murray Duncan served as the Defensive Coordinator at Lone Oak High School in under Jack Haskins. Lone Oak was the state runner up in Class 4A in 2007. Coach Duncan’s defense only allowed 248 points during that season.

From 2005-2007 Coach Duncan was the head coach at T.K. Stone Middle School in Elizabethtown compiling a 12-4 record for those 2 years and averaging 45-50 players on the roster each season.

Duncan took time off from football from 2002-2005 but from 1999-2002 he was the defensive coordinator for Elizabethtown High School where he helped build a foundation for the 2004 Elizabethtown Region Runner-up.

Duncan worked at LaRue County High School from 1991-1995 where he was defensive and offensive line, strength and conditioning coach and defensive coordinator. LaRue County won the 1991 region championship with a 13-1 record.

Duncan got started in coaching football as an assistant coach under KHSAA Hall of Fame Coach Joe Jaggers at Fort Knox High School from 1984-1990 winning the Class 2A State Championship in 1988 and 1990 and was the Class 2A state runner-up in 1984.

Duncan is a graduate of Murray State University with a degree in Elementary Education and Learning/Behavior Disorder and has a Masters in Elementary Education from Western Kentucky University.

Duncan has been married to his wife Fonda, also a graduate of Murray State, for 33 years and has 5 children, 3 of which are adopted. Jessie who lives in Indianapolis; Zipp, a 2nd team All-SEC Offensive lineman at Kentucky; Drey, who played football and threw shot put and discus for Elizabethtown and Lone Oak High Schools. Christian currently plays football for Murray State University as a defensive back and longsnapper. Their daughter Christina is a senior guard for Murray High School who won the Region 1 Class A championship Saturday night.

Duncan will be arranging a meeting with current football players and any young man interested in playing football sometime the week of February 3-7 as he will be travelling with Murray High School as they participate in the All “A” state basketball tourney in Frankfort this week. Information regarding this meeting and a press conference will be published later this week.
