If you’re wondering if the arts are alive in Logan County, make plans to attend the Logan Arts & Film Festival (LAFF), where local artists come out to let people see what they do.

“It’s a great outlet for local artists,” said Heather Silvey, an officer with the Logan Arts Council, the group that puts on the event. “And we want to give something back to the community.”

That something is a day of art on the square and at the library on Saturday, April 24 from 1 to 7 p.m. This free festival features music, art, poetry, films, food and more.

“There is something for everybody,” Silvey said.

Local artists and crafters will showcase and sell their creations throughout the day on the square. At the craft booths there will be jewelry, stained glass, candles, knitted crafts, bags, purses, hair bows and more. Silvey said artists will also be on hand with sketches, water colors and graphic novels. There will be around 20 booths set up.

While strolling through the booths, people can enjoy music throughout the day.

The music will kick off with the finalists of the Logan Idol competition giving it there best as they try to win. Winners will be announced later in the day. Featured bands will be Shotgun Scooter (Americana), Shady Jake & The Upsetters (blues), Red River Breeze (Celtic), and Highway 431 (rock). There will be acoustic acts and poetry readings between performances. Silvey said the Democratic Headquarters will be open and there will be poetry reading there as well.

The LAFF is a family affair and there will be children’s activities as well. Monica Edwards, of the Logan County Public Library, and the L.I.T.s from the library, will have activities for children in front of the Chamber of Commerce. And the talented kids from Logan County Gymnastics will be performing throughout the afternoon.

If you get hungry while enjoying the music and arts, you can enjoy concessions provided by the local high school bands. The Russellville High Band Boosters will be grilling burgers and pork chop sandwiches and the Logan County High Band Boosters will be selling baked goods to raise money for their trip to perform at Walt Disney World.

Silvey said even while eating you can support the local arts.

The film part of the festival will take place at the Logan County Public Library beginning on Friday and Saturday evenings. On Friday, the films shown will be “Jandek in Nashville” and “This Too Shall Pass” at 5 p.m., “Window” at 6 p.m. and “GoatSucker” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday films will be “The Birth of a Nation” from 5:30 to 8 p.m. followed by “Mandingo.”

Silvey said the art and film festival, now in its fourth year, is a great way for local artists and those who enjoy the arts to come together.

Silvey said it also brings people to downtown Russellville and could be good for the local shops. Festival organizers are inviting the businesses on and around the square to open and extend their hours Saturday and hopefully those who come for LAFF will also do some shopping as well.

The Logan Arts Council will have an information booth set up and Silvey said they’ll be on hand to answer questions and also sign people up to become involved with the council and promoting the arts in Logan County.

For more information on the event, contact Silvey at logancountyartscouncil@gmail.com or just make plans to attend LAFF.

“We just want a lot of people to come out and have fun,” Silvey said.
