Logan County’s annual Relay for Life event was held this past weekend and proved to be a big success as attendance was definitely up from the past few years. Terrie Lawson, Specialist Relay For Life Mid-South Division American Cancer Society, Inc. was very pleased with the turnout and is overwhelmed the amount raised to help fight a disease which affects us all in one way or another.

“I felt attendance was up this year, which is a direct result of the excitement of our teams,” said Lawson. “We had a lot of wonderful veteran teams and several new teams that did fantastic.”

Before the event, Lawson said the total came in at $52,000. The night of the Relay $40,000 was raised. Lawson said the expected total will be $97,500 for the year. Sponsorships are still coming in.

“The committee did a fantastic job planning the event,” Lawson said. “We had wonderful, meaningful ceremonies to honor our survivors and remember those who have lost their fight. My hope is that the community can see the heart and soul that goes into this year around commitment to raising money and awareness for cancer research. Without the money raised through Relay For Life, so many would not receive lifesaving cancer treatments.”

There were 30 teams that participated this year, more than the Relay has had in several years. Sponsorship brought in over $18,000.
