I was seeing a two-week-old with his 18-year-old mother. When i noticed that the child had been born on April 19th, I said: “I see your child has an historic birth date.” The mother said, “Really? What do you mean?”
I said: “Lexington and Concord.” She said: “What?”
I said: “The shot heard round the world. She said: “What?”
I said: “One if by land, two if by sea.” She said: “What?”
I said: “The regulars are coming!” She said: “What!?”
I said: “Paul Revere’s ride.” She said: “What?”
I said: “Never mind!”
Yesterday, The San Bernadino Sun reported that the Rialto school district in California had given its eighth grade class an 18-page essay assignment. The subject was the Holocaust. The students were to argue “whether or not you believe this was an actual event in history, or merely a political scheme created to influence public emotion and gain wealth.”
The school system gave students three sources to use to write their essays. One of the sources alleges that the gassings in concentration camps were a “hoax” and that there is no evidence Jews actually died in gas chambers.
So, no human cattle cars. No concentration camps. No gas chambers? No ovens? How can anyone argue those away?
Apparently there were no objections from the parents of the students until the article about the essay appeared in the Sun.
I suspect these parents may have been taught history by the same educational system that helped the 18-year-old mother learn her history so well.
Rialto school district interim superintendent Mohammad Z. Islam (no, I am not making this up) was to meet with school administrators to look into the controversy.
Our schools are letting us down. Remember: Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeated it.
