If you have any old prescription drugs laying around in your medicine cabinet and you’re not sure what to do with them, you can bring them into Russellville for disposal on Saturday, Oct. 26th.

The South Central Kentucky Drug Task Force, in cooperation with the DEA and local law enforcement agencies will be participating in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Citizens are encouraged to go through their medicine cabinets and collect unused and out-of-date prescription medicines to be destroyed.

A station will be set up at the Logan County Kentucky Sheriff’s Department and the Simpson County Sheriff’s Department from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to collect the medicines. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Last April, Americans turned in 371 tons (over 742,000 pounds of prescription drugs at over 5,800 sites operated by the DEA and its thousands of state and local law enforcement partners. In its six previous Take Back events, the DEA and its partners took in over 2.8 million pounds- more than 1,400 tons- of pills.

“This is the seventh year of the program and the South Central Kentucky Drug Task Force highly encourages everyone to participate,” said Detective Giles Taylor of the South Central Kentucky Drug Task Force. “This program helps keep these potentially dangerous and addictive drugs from winding up on the streets or in our schools. The task force also believes it helps minimize the chances of these substances being ingested by small children and pets.”

Permanent prescription drug collection boxes are located at the Simpson County Sheriff’s Department, Franklin Police Department, Logan County Sheriff’s Department and the Russellville Police Departments.

For more information you may contact Detective Giles Taylor of the South Central Kentucky Drug Task Force at 270-725-4972. Detective Taylor will be on hand at the Logan County Sheriff’s Office between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to answer questions the day of the event.
